2. Measures by the College of Engineering to mitigate the spread of the flu   [Wed, 04 Nov 2009 20:13:11 +0000]
  • All Mosaic workstation keyboard surfaces are cleaned with disinfecting wipes each week.  This process is being carried out in all public Mosaic Labs and Mosaic Classroom/labs.

  • Hand sanitizer lotion dispensers are set up in most of the Mosaic labs.  More have been on order and will be deployed in the labs as soon as possible. We recommend that you use this hand sanitizer when you use the lab.

  • Signage for reminders about good practices to follow to avoid the flu and the spread of the flu has been placed in the labs and in all public areas in engineering building.

4. Top 10 Questions for New Mosaic Users   [Fri, 02 Oct 2009 12:20:13 +0000]

1. When is my MOSAIC account activated?

For COE-majors, the day after you register for ANY class

For non-COE majors, the day after you register for an engineering class

2. What is my Log in id and initial password?

If you are a new College of Engineering member (student, faculty, staff) your account on Mosaic is automatically set up. Your Mosaic user id is the same as your NinerNet id for reading UNCC email.  Your initial Mosaic password will be your birth date (MMDDYY) appended to your BannerID (800 number).  You can log in with your Mosaic ID and password from any Mosaic workstation or using Mosaic Anywhere.

I.E. if your banner number is 800XXXXXX and your birthday is Jan 2, 2003, then your initial password would be 800XXXXXX010203

3. Where my files stored are and how much quota do I have?

All user files are stored on the network via AFS.  This allows the files to be backed up daily as well as providing access via any Mosaic machine or even off campus with FileDrawers (http://coefiles.uncc.edu/). Your files reside on the H: drive under Mosaic Windows and in your HOME directory on Mosaic Linux and Mosaic Solaris machines.

See http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/account-disk-space/disk-quota.html for the current disk quotas

4. Where are the labs located and what are the hours and rules?

Lab location and hours are always posted on: http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/apps/labs/labmaps.php

Lab Rules: http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/mosaic-labs/lab-rules.html

5. What software is available on Mosaic?

To support the College of Engineering’s vision of providing the latest technology to students, Mosaic includes many popular software packages.  A full list, as well online help, can be viewed at

http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/available-on-mosaic.html

6. What is MosaicAnywhere?

Using Microsoft’s Remote Desktop functionality, MosaicAnywhere allows access to a Mosaic machine over an Internet connection.  Visit http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/remote_desk/index.html for more details and available remote workstations.

8. Can I use my laptop in labs, in class, in facilities on campus?

There is a portion of Smith 226 set aside for personal computing, and users are welcome to use their laptops where space is available in all Mosaic labs.  Additionally, most classes will allow students to take notes on a laptop, though obviously usage could be limited when the classes go closed-note for quizzes, tests, etc.

9. How do I access Mosaic 64 bit Linux?

From off-campus, use the following instructions.
http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/images/stories/graphical-remote-linux.pdf

If logged into a Mosaic XP machine or MosaicAnywhere, then go to Start-> All Programs -> Mosaic XP ->Unix connectivity ->Exceed Linux (Automatic Server)

10. How long will my Mosaic account be available once I leave the COE?

http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/account-management/request-account-extension.html

(1) Mosaic accounts that remain dormant or deactivated for nine (9) consecutive months will be deleted from the entire system.

(2) Prior to deletion all user files associated with the account will be downloaded onto magnetic media (archived) and retained by the Systems Administrator for one calendar year.

5. Changes to Instant Messaging on Mosaic   [Mon, 05 Oct 2009 19:53:11 +0000]

Recently Yahoo has disabled older clients from connecting to their servers.  This has been done previously by other 3rd party IM providers.  Mosaic simply no longer has the bandwidth to keep up with these requests.  Starting in Mid October, we will be uninstalling all of the IM clients from Mosaic except Windows Live Messenger.  We realize this will impact some of our users and are offering alternative products. A web-based alternative can be found here: http://www.meebo.com/ We have found that the Pidgin Portable edition IM client seems to work well and can be installed by the end-user into either their Mosaic account or onto a USB flash drive.  The setup process is simple.

Visit the following link to see more information about installing your own Pidgin Portable Instant Message software on Mosaic.

6. Your Printing Quota   [Tue, 06 Oct 2009 13:50:00 +0000]

Every undergraduate student can now see the detailed list of all print jobs that were processed by Mosaic.   Open a command dos shell  Start > Run > CMD

  • running pquota without options just shows the pages left.
  • running with the -l or --log” option shows the history
  • long output will be displayed a page at a time.
  • running pquota with the -h  of--help options shows a help screen.

See  http://www.coe.uncc.edu/mosaic/account-printing/standard-print-quota.html

If you exhaust your printing quota you have an easy way to purchase additional print quota.  See the following

7. Linux Services   [Tue, 06 Oct 2009 19:07:20 +0000]

There are 4 Linux X-servers available to all members of the College of Engineering.   These Linux X-Servers are powerful systems that run the 64 bit version of Red Hat Linux Enterprise version 5.2.    One of the servers, lxs-me1.uncc.edu,  is a compute server with 8 processors cores, 64 GB of memory and an extremely fast disk.  The Linux X-Server systems are:

lxs-me1.uncc.edu

lxs-sm1.uncc.edu

lxs-sm2.uncc.edu

lxs-sm3.uncc.edu

You may access a specific one or let the system pick one for you by entering the host name of lxs.uncc.edu.

8. Accessing Mosaic Files Through the Web   [Tue, 06 Oct 2009 19:08:14 +0000]
