Penalty were the deciding factor in the showdown between intrastate squads with UNC-Wilmington (14-2-5) advancing to the second round with a 4-1 advantage on penalty kicks over Charlotte (11-3-6) after the game ended in a 1-1 tie after double overtime. Charlotte's Adam Gross scored first in the game with his 28th minute strike, while Daniel Roberts added a goal for UNCW in the 81st minute to tie the game and send it into extra periods.

Charlotte 49ers men's soccer senior midfielder Adam Gross was just named first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Gross, who was a third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American last season, joins Jim Kunevicius (1996-97) as the only two student-athletes in the program's history to earn multiple Academic All-American honors.

The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team will host UNC-Wilmington in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament announced today by the men's soccer selection committee. The 49ers will host UNCW on Thursday at Transamerica Field and make their first appearance in the tournament since 1997 and sixth time in the history of the program.

In the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (11-3-5) tied Rhode Island (9-8-2), 1-1, but fell in penalty kicks to the Rams 4-3, who advanced to the semifinals. The 18th ranked 49ers scored first in the game and led at halftime, but allowed a second half goal that tied the game in the 67th minute.

Senior midfielder Adam Gross became the first 49ers men's soccer player to be named A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. While, freshman forward Jennings Rex was named to the A-10 All-Rookie team.

The 15th-ranked Charlotte 49ers (11-3-4, A-10: 5-2-2) are seeded fifth in the Atlantic 10 Championship which will be played at the University of Rhode Island's Soccer Complex, November 12-15. The 49ers face fourth-seed Rhode Island (9-8, A-10: 6-3) in the second A-10 Tournament quarterfinal game, Thursday, November 12 at 7:30 pm. Charlotte, who is looking for their first A-10 Tournament title, reached the Championship game of the 2007 A-10 Tournament.

Smith is the fourth different 49ers men's soccer player to earn National Team of the Week honors this season. Earlier this year, Evan James, Adam Gross and Nathan Mathers have been named to various National Teams of the Week.

The 11th/16th-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (10-2-4, A-10: 4-1-2) rallied with three unanswered goals to defeat Xavier (2-12-1, A-10: 1-7), 3-2, on the road. Freshman Donnie Smith (Matthews, NC/Charlotte Catholic) recorded his first career multi-goals game with the 49ers' first two goals. Then, senior Adam Gross (Austin, TX/Dripping Springs) tallied his team-leading eighth goal and fourth game-winner of the season.

Last year, Gross earned third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors. As a result of being named first-team academic all-district, Gross will represent the district on a national ballot for Academic All-America honors.

First, the 49ers battle first place Dayton on the road, Friday, October 30 at 7 pm. Then, Charlotte concludes their weekend road trip to the state of Ohio at Xavier, Sunday, November 1 at 1 pm.
