Rain shortened the UNC Wilmington Invitational tournament, but a few of the Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team members were able to get some matches in this weekend. Iveta Guneva won two singles matches, while Kimber Redfern and Gabi Vergara captured a pair of doubles matches.

Charlotte women's tennis head coach Michaela Gorman has announced the addition of Chelsea Mills as assistant coach for the team this fall. Mills recently earned a Masters of Sports Leadership from Northeastern University while an assistant at Division III Tufts University since 2007.

Every year, Diversity in Education honors student-athletes of ethnic origin and this year the Charlotte 49ers had 16 student-athletes from six sports honored on the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars list.

Charlotte landed a trio of players on the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis All-Conference lists to wrap up the 2009 season. Senior Yudeshnee Pillay and her doubles partner, junior Ana Spivakovsky, were named to the First-Team. Senior Koren Fleming was named to the Second Team. Spivakovsky was also named to the Academic All-Conference Team.

The Charlotte 49ers Department of Athletics had three teams honored by the NCAA for outstanding academic progress. The Academic Progress Rate, or APR, released by the NCAA listed Charlotte baseball, women's tennis and volleyball among the programs with outstanding numbers in the country. The NCAA honors teams that earned multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

With another 4-0 victory, this time in the quarterfinals over fourth-seeded Rhode Island, the Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team advanced to Saturday morning's semifinal against top-seeded Richmond at 10:30 a.m. at the 26th Annual Atlantic 10 Championships at the Club 4 Life.

The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team, seeded fifth, won their opening round match over 12th-seeded Saint Joseph's 4-0 at the 26th Annual Atlantic 10 Championships at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa. In the match, sophomore Gabi Vergara tied the school record for doubles wins in a season with her 26th victory of the season. Charlotte is now 14-4 on the season.

After a 13-4 regular season, which included a win over A-10 foe Saint Louis, the Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team has been seeded fifth in the upcoming 26th annual Atlantic 10 Conference Championships this weekend at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.

Senior Yudeshnee Pillay was the A-10 women's tennis Player of the Week, while sophomore Jason Roberts and senior Lamarra Currie earned the men's and women's track Performer of the Week honors. Rookies of the Week went to Andrea Rivera for women's tennis and Jake Deaton for men's track.

The Charlotte 49ers finished the regular season with an 8-1 home record with a 6-1 Wednesday afternoon women's tennis victory over Wofford at the Phillips Tennis Complex. Charlotte is 13-4 heading into the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament next weekend. Both Charlotte seniors continued to climb the record books in the victory.
